ABOUT JOHN COLES

John’s love of fly fishing began back in the UK over 30 years ago. When he arrived in Australia he was surprised by the fly fishing opportunities available on both streams and still water.

He fell in love with the Australian bush and those remote and beautiful places that he has been fortunate enough to fish in.In the mid 80’s he began exploring the Cox’s River system and its winter spawning runs, and developed fly patterns and fishing techniques, which proved very successful in this little fished area.

The Central Tablelands are so close to Sydney, and a day spent on one of its' small slow streams is just magical...

Over the years he has extensively explored the many wonderful streams in the Oberon area and the numerous dams, which offer very challenging fishing. He now has his own stocked dam near Oberon for his clients use.

Each season finds him fishing in and around Tumut one of his favourite areas, tailrace fishing on the Tumut and other beautiful freestone streams, as well as the classic rivers of the Snowy Mountains and the Monaro.

In times of drought he has moved his attention to other areas and species. There is always a new set of challenges to embrace. He enjoys the thrill of saltwater fly fishing, chasing Yellow fin Tuna off the Shelf or capturing Kingfish and Salmon in the Harbour, or Flathead from an estuary.

Many people are surprised when they learn how many fly fishing options are right here in Sydney. There are many opportunities for all types of fly fishing in NSW. John also spends several weeks each year in New Zealand both North and South Islands.
